Dr. Theodore Francis
Dr. Theodore Francis is an Assistant Professor of History at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin,
Texas where he teaches courses on African-American, Caribbean, and United States History. A
graduate of Morehouse College, Theodore earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Caribbean-Atlantic
World History at the University of Chicago. Theodore has researched race and the histories of
Bermudians of African descent, authoring “The Big Conversation: The Bermuda Race Relations
Initiative report” published in 2009 for the Government, and more recently assisted with the
online Black History in Bermuda: Timeline Spanning Five Centuries published by Citizen’s Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB).
Dr. Francis co-authored Prudent Rebels: Bermudians & the First Age of Revolution with Clarence
Maxwell and Alexandra Mairs-Kessler published in 2019. Prudent Rebels examines the role of
the British colony of Bermuda during the American Revolution, giving attention to the activities
of enslaved black mariners in smuggling and privateering. His current research focuses on
segregation and Black Tourism during the twentieth century and he is presently working on a
manuscript exploring the role of African American tourism during the civil rights struggle to
desegregate Bermuda.
